The Jazz River takes a break from producing thematic shows and profiling persons deserving wider recognition.
Instead, it invites you to Let’s Get Lost. Ports of call could be anywhere, the fusions lush and surprising. The rhythms, grooves, instruments, and arrangements guaranteed to delight your senses. For a sojourn to anywhere and everywhere, Let’s Get Lost.
Music has the power to transport we the listener. Music can take us to places we have not been before and make the strange sound familiar and inviting. Instrumental music, specifically, creates space for our own imaginations to wander, to play, and to trip the light fantastic. It’s a shame that what passes for “popular” music is exclusively vocal-based and increasingly video-driven. It kind of says to hell with our own imaginations. Jazz, on the other hand, music from the wider world on the other other hand, thank goodness for them too.
How about for just an hour, Let’s Get Lost? Let’s get lost in the steamy funk on the streets of Lagos. Let’s get lost in the spice markets of a Moroccan Souk with a vague blues harmonica to lead us forward. Let’s get lost in the outer space reimagining of an old Hendrix sci-fi masterpiece. Let’s get lost in the shamanic funk of acolytes of Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor. Fusions of folk melodies, indigenous instruments, jazz improvisations, and global surprises, await. Major and minor keys, odd time signatures make us lose our way and find our way. It’s fun to get lost in the sounds.
