I know you’ve heard all the hype, and some believe it.

Valentine’s Day is little more than an invention of the Hallmark Card company and flower and candy stores, the sales of champagne and strawberries, candles, and lingerie. There is societal pressure to be with the one you love on February 14 and to make it a special day. Of course, any close examination of the history of St. Valentine reveals very different and conflicting stories that are not linked to romantic love.

But I am not going to review the history nor am I going to wax cynically about the day. Instead, as a representative of those without a sweetheart, I am going to use my love of music to create a tone poem for this day and dedicate it to others like me who may still be searching and hoping.

Tune in with Matthew Goldwasser on Sunday, February 13, at 5 pm. Only on KUVO JAZZ!
