A couple of tracks from “Dynamic Maximum Tension” the Grammy-nominated album by Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. One features Cecile McLorin Salvant on vocals, and the other runs 35 minutes in length and will comprise much of the second hour of my show. I try to play something long in duration on my show a week or two after the conclusion of a KUVO pledge drive to give listeners a respite from our requests/pleas for your financial support to what we hope is your favorite public radio station. This will be the first time KUVO will be airing tunes from the album which will allow you to hear one of the best big bands currently working. (FYI: KUVO exceeded its goal for its most recent pledge drive by around 20% to 25% thanks to listener members such as you)

We’ll also include tracks by Joshua Redman, Kendrick Scott, and Gerald Clayton, all of whom will be performing in Denver within the next week.

Plus we’ll feature flutists Hubert Laws, Dave Valentin, Anne Drummond, Lew Tabackin, and Ali Ryerson on a variety of recordings during the 8 pm hour.

As the Academy Awards are taking place on March 10th that means it’s once again time for my annual “Jazz Goes to the Movies” programs every Wednesday evening for the next four weeks. I thought I could get away without doing them last year and that no one would notice. But I heard from a couple of listeners at the time telling me how much they looked forward to them. And the very same thing happened this year. So I guess I have no choice but to continue…

Tentatively for next week, I plan to feature music associated with Bernard Tavernier’s “Round Midnight” from 1986 for which Dexter Gordon received a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination. It’s recently been issued on DVD in a 4K restoration by the Criterion Collection. I’ll also include some music from Elmer Bernstein whose film scores include “Walk on the Wild Side,” “The Great Escape,” The Man With the Golden Arm,” “Animal House,” and “The Sweet Smell of Success” which included performances by the Chico Hamilton Quintet.

On The Night Beat Jazz Beyond Category for Wednesday, February 28, 2024, 8-10 pm on 89.3FM KUVO JAZZ, streaming at kuvo.org and via the KUVO app.
