Tune in Wednesday evening at 8 pm for The Night Beat as Doug Crane explores jazz versions of songs by the alternative rock band Radiohead. Pianist Brad Mehldau was perhaps the first jazz musician to cover songs by the band. We’ll hear from Brad as well as pianist Robert Glasper, violinist Mads Tolling, Radiohead’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood, the chamber music ensemble Alarm Will Sound with Steve Reich, vocalist Jamie Cullum and University of Northern Colorado alum Steve Owen’s big band featuring tenor saxophonist Peter Sommer, a music professor at Colorado State University.

We’ll also note the birthdays of Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen (born 10/8/1970) with a couple of his recordings that perfectly complement the covers of Radiohead songs; Brazilian-born pianist Helio Alves (born 10/8/1966) who besides releasing his own albums as a leader has worked and recorded with Claudio Roditi, Joe Henderson, Rosa Passos, Dave Pietro plus many others and lastly bassist Jimmie Blanton (10/8/1918-7/30/1942) who, in his short tenure with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the early 1940s, brought the bass forward as a solo instrument for the very first time in jazz, paving the way for all jazz bassists that followed.
