Venus Cruz is the first lady of the Future Jazz Project, a collective of national and international jazz musicians. Together, they’ve opened for a wide range of artists, from The Roots, Black Thought, Goapele, Al Green and Guru, to Bishop Desmond Tutu, to name just a few. In 2012, Cruz won Westword’s Best R&B Vocalist Award. Cruz is performing at the Chautauqua Community House on Friday, October 21 at 7:30pm. She will be joined by Mikey Smith (guitar) and Mark Emmons (percussion).

She is also the Host/DJ of the “Jazz Odyssey” radio show every Wednesday on 89.3FM, 10p-12a. Improvisation, a soulful delivery and an ability to transcend genres are always part of Cruz’ musical approach. This intimate concert will feature Venus performing original compositions as well as modern takes on classic jazz standards.

“Venus Cruz has a super-advanced ear, a way with words and spirit that connects with people. She is also a brilliant lyricist who infuses the poignant with a sense of humor.” — Greg Tanner Harris
