This week’s Vinyl Vault swings with the direct-to-disc sound of the Harry James Orchestra and their album “Comin’ From A Good Place.” Released in 1977, this is one of three direct-to-disc albums James recorded for Sheffield Labs. The direct-to-disc technology was short lived because it was soon eclipsed by digital recordings and compact discs. But direct-to-disc cut out the recording tape and all the intermediate steps to create a truly live recording. Vinyl aficionados will want to tune in to hear the highest fidelity available. And, oh yeah, it swings. James led a hard working touring band and when they recorded this album, they were in top form, tearing through such big band classics as “Moten Swing,” “Two O’ Clock Jump,” Tuxedo Junction” and “Watch What Happens.” Join Geoff Anderson for some high fidelity swing on the Vinyl Vault, January, Tuesday 22 at 8:30 on KUVO Jazz.
