The next Vinyl Vault will feature some state-of-the-art swing from one of the masters, Count Basie. We’ll hear his 1981 album on Pablo entitled “Kansas City 5.” The album featured Milt Jackson on vibes, Joe Pass on guitar, John Heard on bass and Louie Bellson on the drums.

In the early 1980s, Basie recorded several small group albums on Pablo with the name Kansas City in the title. It was a reference to the town where he first hit it big.

The album features Basie standards such as “One O’Clock Jump” as well as some lesser-known tunes such as “Jive at Five” by Basie and Harry Edison, “Frog’s Blues” by Basie, Jackson and Pass and “Blues for Joe Turner” by those same composers.
