This week on the Vinyl Vault we’ll hear some swingin’ rhythm and blues from sax man Greg Piccolo. Piccolo was a member, and for a while the leader, of the jump blues band Roomful of Blues and he’s joined on this album by many of his Roomful band mates including founder Duke Robillard on guitar and some vocals. The album is named “Heavy Juice” and it came out in 1990 on Black Top Records.

Roomful of Blues is still together and going strong after over 45 years and many personnel changes. They are based in Providence, Rhode Island, but they used to tour throughout the country. I saw them several times along the Front Range in the ‘70s and ‘80s. They were famous for high energy, good-time shows. “Heavy Juice” captures that exuberance and their mix of swing, rhythm & blues and jazz.

Check out the Vinyl Vault, on The Night Beat with Geoff Anderson (8-10 pm) every Tuesday at 8:30 pm on KUVO, 89.3 FM,  streaming live online kuvo.org, or listen live from the KUVO mobile app.
