This week’s Vinyl Vault will feature a 1975 direct-to-disc recording by Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker, “I’ve Got the Music in Me.” Direct-to-disc was a technology used in the 1970s and early 1980s, before digital came along, to achieve extremely high quality fidelity. A whole album side was played live, mixed live and recorded direct to a master disc. The result was not only superior sonic quality, but an exciting performance because the musicians knew they had one shot; there would be no overdubbing. This album features Thelma Houston on vocals on about half the tracks and a stellar big band in support including players like Tom Scott, Larry Carlton, Lincoln Mayorga, Mike Melvoin, Jim Gordon and many others. Check out the direct-to-disc experience on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, Tuesday, December 12 at 8:30 on KUVO.
