The Vinyl Vault will feature an album from vibist/percussionist Mike Dillon, entitled “Rosewood.” The album was released in 2020 on Royal Potato Family Records.

The album is a duo recording with Earl Harvin on drums and cymbals. Meanwhile, Dillon plays electric vibraphone, acoustic vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, electric bass marimba, timpani, tubular bells, concert bells, congas, bongo, timbale, tabla, percussion, drumset, piano and malletkat synth. Whew!

The album is named “Rosewood” because that is the type of wood used to make marimba bars. Most of the tunes are originals, but Dillon includes a few covers including Trent Reznor’s “Hurt,” originally recorded by Reznor’s band Nine Inch Nails and later recorded in a compelling, intimate performance by Johnny Cash, not long before his death. Dillon’s treatment is instrumental, but it maintains the poignancy of the Johnny Cash version.

Dillon has worked with a wide and eclectic cast of musicians. He’s a member of Garage a Trois and Les Claypool’s Fancy Band. He’s collaborated with Ani DeFranco, Galactic, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento and many more. He’ll appear at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox with Punkadelic on Sunday, March 17.

But before that, check out Mike Dillon on the Vinyl Vault with host Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, March 12 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
