Guitarist Mike Stern and his album “Time in Place” will be the feature on the next Vinyl Vault. Miles Davis alum Stern released the album in 1988 on Atlantic Jazz Records. All the compositions on the album were penned by Stern.

The album features a stellar line-up with Michael Brecker and Bob Berg taking turns in the tenor sax chair. Jim Beard played keyboards, Jeff Andrews was the bass player, Peter Erskine played drums and Don Alias was on percussion. The album was produced by fellow guitarist Steve Khan.

For the most part, the music is 80s-era fusion and sometimes sounds a bit like late-period Weather Report. Of course, Stern’s guitar is prominently featured throughout drawing influences from the likes of John Scofield and Pat Metheny.

Check out Mike Stern’s “Time in Place” with Geoff Anderson on the next Vinyl Vault, Tuesday at 8:30 on KUVO JAZZ!
