The Vinyl Vault kicks off 2022 with a swingin’ album from Monty Alexander and his trio, “Full Steam Ahead.” The album was released in 1985 on the Concord Jazz record label. Joining Alexander on the date were Ray Brown on bass and Frank Gant on drums.

Vinyl Vault is sponsored by Vinyl Me, Please

The album features an eclectic song selection, four bebop tunes, a couple with the bossa nova beat, and then the outliers like the Rolling Stones’ “Can’t Get No Satisfaction,” “Happy Talk” from South Pacific, and “Because You’re Mine” by Mario Lanza. The trio attacks each one with wholehearted exuberance. The song selection is indicative of Alexander’s enthusiastic quest to search out new frontiers in music and his wide-ranging musical interests.

Alexander is a long-time favorite at KUVO. He’s a past performer at KUVO’s Live at the Vineyards series. Inexplicably, this is an album that, so far, has evaded the KUVO library. But the Vinyl Vault has a copy, and this is your chance to hear this top-drawer recording.

Check out the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, January 4, at 8:30 pm. On KUVO JAZZ!
