This week’s Vinyl Vault features an album never released on compact disc, “Nice To Have Met You” by Dutch flute player Tys van Leer. The album was released in 1978 on Columbia Records and features 44 musicians throughout. Many of the participants were well-known American studio musicians at the time including Tom Scott and Ralph McDonald who co-produced the album. Also appearing were Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Harvey Mason, Anthony Jackson, Steve Kahn, Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Ronnie Cuber and many more. Van Leer came to notoriety in the early 70s as a member of the Dutch rock group Focus. “Nice to Have Met You” features a remake of Focus’ big hit, “Hocus Pocus” complete with van Leer’s yodeling. The album also features one of the better album covers of the era. Tune into the Vinyl Vault this Tuesday at 8:30 on KUVO Jazz.
