This week’s Vinyl Vault feature is one of those 1970s records with a long list of musical styles all blended into a tasty stew. In 1977, vocalist Paula Lockheart got together with trumpeter and cornetist Peter Ecklund and his band for a self-titled release on Flying Fish Records. You’ll hear snippets of classic jazz, blues, barrelhouse and some ballads.

The material consists of a combination of originals and covers such as “I Can Cook, Too” and “Kiddeo.” The originals shine just as brightly with one of the highlights being Lockheart’s “Howlin’ at the Moon.”

Most notable among the friends on the album was Mac Rebennack a/k/a Dr. John who joined the fun on piano on several tracks. Singer Phoebe Snow appeared on some background vocals.

Join Geoff Anderson on Tuesday, July 25 at 8:30 pm for Paula Lockheart, Peter Ecklund and their friends on the Vinyl Vault on KUVO JAZZ.
