The Vinyl Vault remembers Dave Samuels. Vibes and marimba man Samuels passed away last week at age 70, but he left a compelling musical legacy. One of his many projects was the group Double Image. The band only released three albums and the Vinyl Vault has one of them: “Dawn,” released in 1979 on ECM Records. Double Image featured both Samuels and David Friedman up front on vibes and marimbas. Two percussionists leading a jazz band in the late 70s was certainly unusual, but Samuels and Friedman made it work. On “Dawn,” the two mallet men were joined by Harvie Swartz (now known as Harvie S) on bass and Michael Di Pasqua on drums and percussion.

Check out the fine mallet work from Samuels and Friedman Tuesday, April 30 at 8:30pm on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson on KUVO Jazz.
