Swedish guitarist Rune Gustafsson got together with American tenor sax player Zoot Sims in late 1978 to record “The Sweetest Sounds.” The album was released the following year on the Pablo Today label.

Gustafsson and Sims were joined by George Mraz on bass, Peter Donald on drums and Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar. It’s a relaxed yet swinging affair with all the sophistication that you would expect from a late 70s Pablo album.

The program includes some rock hits of the day along with some jazz standards. We’ll hear the John/Taupin composition “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” Jobim’s “Waters of March” and a tune named “Indentation” by Erik Nordstrom.

Check out “The Sweetest Sounds” with Geoff Anderson on the Vinyl Vault, on Tuesday, June 27 at 8:30 pm on KUVO JAZZ.
