“The swing is the thing.” That will be our motto on the next Vinyl Vault when we dig into tracks from an album by Stephane Grappelli, Joe Pass and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen recorded live at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The live recording was made on July 6, 1979, and released in 1980 on Pablo Records. Grappelli was 71 at the time and in fine form. He had, by that time, firmly established himself as the premier violinist in jazz. Pass, on guitar and Pedersen, on bass, were also at the top of the jazz lists on their respective instruments.
Despite the absence of a drummer, this is a hard-swinging album sure to inspire foot tapping if not outright rug cutting. It’s a program of jazz standards that Grappelli had performed over the years, every one of them a top-flight composition and each one performed by this trio with the utmost care and dedication.
