In the summer of 1976, drummer Billy Cobham got together with keyboardist George Duke, formed a band and went on a short tour of Europe. Atlantic Records recorded the proceedings and later that year released “Live on Tour in Europe.”

Besides Cobham and Duke, the band also included John Scofield on guitar and Alphonso Johnson on the bass.

By 1976, both Cobham and Duke were well-known for fusion and fusion-like music. Cobham had been with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Duke had been playing with Frank Zappa. Johnson was a veteran of Weather Report by that time and Scofield was new to the scene. So new, in fact, he even had hair back then.

Oh, and the album has a pretty great cover.

Check out some ‘70s fusion with “Live on Tour in Europe” from the Billy Cobham – George Duke Band in the next Vinyl Vault, Tuesday, July 18 at 8:30 pm on KUVO JAZZ.
