2019 marks the 50th anniversary for John Mayall’s album, “The Turning Point” and we’ll hear several tracks from it this week on the Vinyl Vault. The Turning Point marked a new direction for Mayall. Previously the leader of several iterations of the Blues Breakers, high powered, high volume electric blues bands featuring players such as Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, and Peter Green, Mayall decided in 1969 to literally tone things down. He went acoustic. And he dropped the drums. And he added some serious jazz elements to his blues. The result was a truly unique sound. Joined by fingerstyle guitarist Jon Mark, sax and flute man Johnny Almond and bassist Steve Thompson, the quartet works its way through a number of Mayall originals of varying tempos, textures and styles. It’s capped off by the semi-hit and wholly infectious Room to Move. Don’t miss the Vinyl Vault on Tuesday, January 8 at 8:30 pm on KUVO Jazz.
