This week the Vinyl Vault goes to church with the album “Vince Guaraldi at Grace Cathedral.” Recorded in 1965, it is believed to be the first use of jazz during a church service in America. Guaraldi composed the music specifically for this recording, incorporating the church’s 68 voice choir with his jazz trio of the time, Tom Beeson on bass and Lee Charlton on drums. Guaraldi fuses his signature mainstream/Latin style with the sacred chants of the choir for a truly unique sound. Just in time for Christmas, check out “Vince Guaraldi at Grace Cathedral” on the Vinyl Vault, Tuesday, December 17 at 8:30 pm, only on KUVO Jazz.
