KUVO is lining up several specials to celebrate the musical legacy of “The Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin.  She died at age 76 this morning at home in Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press.

 

KUVO hosts will be drawing from her jazz, soul, blues, and gospel collections throughout the day, and a few shows through the weekend will explore the Aretha Franklin catalog.

“Jazz with Andy O'” – Thursday, 1:30pm: Andy O’ and KUVO General Manager Carlos Lando dig deep with a remembrance today at 1:30 p.m.  “She touched so many genres,” said Lando.  “Aretha was a formative figure in America’s musical coming of age.”

 

“Latin Soul Party” – Friday, 8pm – 10pm: Aretha Franklin had 100 hits on the Billboard charts, including more than a few tracks for the party scene.  Danny Valenzuela has a special remix of “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” to share as well!

 

“Funky Boombox” – Friday, 10pm – midnight: Aretha’s music was smooth, soulful, jazzy, inspirational, AND funky! Host Rob Seligmann will present a vinyl tribute to the Queen of Soul, including the million-seller “Lady Soul.”

 

“All Blues” – Saturday, 4pm – 6pm: Blues was also in Aretha Franklin’s repertoire, including several CDs, and her own singular style of tracks like “Muddy Water” and “Today I Sing the Blues.”

 

“R&B Jukebox” – Saturday, 6pm – 8pm: On this weekend’s annual cover show, Rolando Garcia will present a couple of Aretha Franklin’s most notable covers of others’ work. Next weekend, on the August 25th edition of the “R&B Jukebox,” tune in for some of Aretha’s greatest R&B tracks.

 

“The Gospel Train” – Sunday, 9am – 10am: Aretha, the daughter of prominent Detroit minister the Rev. C.L. Franklin, grew up in the church and was first and foremost a gospel singer.
