P * S * A * L * M proudly presents its annual salute to African American composers. There are many who are rarely mentioned, but often played in the lexicon of jazz music. However, we will play from Billy Strayhorn,Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, Horace Silver, Juan Tizol to name but a few. This swingin’ ensem- ble brings its unique brand based on the legendary “Sound Of Five Points”.
Decades ago, the Five Points neighborhood was such a hot spot for jazz music that it attracted the likes of Miles Davis and Billie Holliday, earning the moniker “Harlem of the West.” While the area has since traded saxophones for sour suds, Denver native and pianist Purnell Steen has kept the historic area’s musical legacy alive with his group Le Jazz Machine.
