It’s New Music Monday, from 12 ’til 1 pm exclusively on KUVO Jazz! Stay up-to-date on the latest releases from the world of jazz!
Dominican Jazz Project – “Desde Lejos”
Another example of what determined musicians can accomplish is found in the sophomore release from the Dominican Jazz Project. Like many other artists, the 13 musicians had to find creative ways to record their parts remotely, due to the global pandemic. Location wasn’t the only hurdle for these artists, who navigated all the personal, physical, family and creative challenges as the rest of us.
The outcome is superb – interesting and dynamic. The title translates “from afar.” Musically, they bring it home.
Hilary Kole – “Sophisticated Lady”
Rebel at heart, second-generation singer Hilary Kole settles in to a collection of standards on this release. Musically, the band swings, and vocally, Kole lays out her own jazz chops. Her effort demonstrates why standards work – we love the melodies, the stories, and the way artists tackle the canon to bring something fresh to the ears. Her song selection is important, as a few numbers are a less well-known.
Chris Standring – “Wonderful World”
Here’s what a well-known jazz guitarist does with standards (including Donald Fagen’s Maxine)…keep your trio challenged (drummer Peter Erskine, bassist Geoff Gascoyne), dare to work songs we already know and love, and add strings! Kathrin Shorr appears fo the cover of “What a Wonderful World, but the project is otherwise instrumental. Guests Harvey Mason and Randy Brecker totally sucked me in to Standring’s lush soundscape. I’m relaxing!
I’ll be sitting in for Arturo this Monday, August 2, at Noon for our weekly excursion listening to the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz in box.
