It’s New Music Monday, from 12 ’til 1 pm exclusively on KUVO Jazz! Stay up-to-date on the latest releases from the world of jazz!
Long known as the music mind and keyboardist alongside Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson is releasing his first record in two decades. His band-mates are a generation younger, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge on a variety of strings, reeds and percussion, with Malachi Morehead on the drum kit. It’s the eighth release on the sardonically named “Jazz is Dead” Records.
Blues guitar wunderkind Christone “Kingfish” Ingram has emerged from the pandemic with power-packed, 14-track CD named for his home area code “662.” Of course, brilliant guitar work throughout, but clever lyrics, catchy hooks and a maturing voice make this release a must-listen, if not must-own.
LA-based pianist Bobby West left for Asia, the Middle East and Europe, demonstrating lush layers of melody and flourish. He is now considered an “elder” by jazz fans in SoCal, and we’re delighted to get his first release as a leader in the straight-up jazz trio tradition. “Leimert Park After Dark” is his tribute to the well-known cultural and artistic heart of LA’s African-American community.
I’ll be sitting in for Arturo this Monday, July 26, at Noon for our weekly excursion listening to the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz in box.
