In 2001, Westcliffe Jazz Festival director Jan Pyle suggested to Chris and Paul Romaine of the Colorado Conservatory of the Jazz Arts (CCJA), that they should start a jazz camp to coincide with the festival.

In 2008 when the festival was discontinued, the festival organizers asked CCJA to continue the jazz camp.

Last year marked their 20th Anniversary.

This summer, after closely watching the ever-changing COVID-19 Colorado state guidelines for outdoor camps, they decided to ask if any students were interested in attending. In July, 25 students, 3 faculty members, and Paul’s daughter Loren, a registered nurse, made the trip to Westcliffe. Through all the social distancing and strict conditions, the students created some memorable music.

Tune in to “On Stage,” Saturday, December 5, at 10 pm, when you’ll hear original compositions by students from the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts, recorded at the Westcliffe Jazz Camp.

On Stage is a KUVO JAZZ exclusive and is hosted by Susan Gatschet.
