As we continue with our tribute to women musicians and women poets, on Sunday we will delve into the hard-fought struggles to gain suffrage.

In 1920 women gained the right to vote in the United States.

In 2020 vocalist Karrin Allyson released “Shoulder to Shoulder: A Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage” an album that Karrin was very proud of. In addition to her sextet, she features a stellar cast including Harry Belafonte, Roseanne Cash, Regina Carter, Denise Donatelli, Kurt Elling, Lalah Hathaway, Madelene Peyroux, Rapsody and Veronica Swift. This album will be featured in-depth as well as other music and poetry addressing the efforts to attain equal rights for women in America.

“Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.”
