KUVO’s performance series “On Stage” presents a brand new recording taken from this summer’s Vail Jazz Festival at Vail Square: Davina & The Vagabonds, Saturday, August 7, at 10 pm and Monday, August 9 at 7 pm.

With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. They’ve played “under the earth” at the Caverns south of Nashville, and so the next logical venue would be on the “mountaintop” at Vail Square!

Davina’s commanding stage presence generates comparisons to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, and Betty Boop, but she’s an original.  Their shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s originals lend themselves to the American Songbook with an edgy nostalgia.  Trumpeter/vocalist Zach Lozier is an alumnus of the Vail Jazz Workshop! Matt Hanzelka shares synchronized horn parts on the trombone.  Connor Hammergren and Andrew Foreman cover the drums and bass respectively.

It’s a party “under the stars” with Davina and the Vagabonds on the next “On Stage” with host Susan Gatschet, Saturdays at 10 pm and Mondays at 7 pm. Only on KUVO JAZZ.
