KUVO’s archive performance broadcast series “On Stage” takes you into the world of singer-actress Peggy Lee through the music of bassist-vocalist Nicki Parrott as part of the Vail Jazz Festival.

The Australian-born Parrott began with piano, then flute, but she told one interviewer, “I like the voice of the bass.” Studying with visiting artists Ray Brown and John Clayton led to a scholarship to New York in 1994. Her residency at the Iridium with Les Paul led to a who’s who of accompaniments, and on Broadway. Nicki actively participates in continuing musical education for women, helping them further their careers and remain active in music well beyond their teen years. She takes pride in teaching music to inner-city children, giving them opportunities to express creativity, encouraging them to stay actively involved with school, and opening brighter options for the future.

Parrott’s voice channels the renaissance woman Peggy Lee, and her bass-playing impresses, as you will hear on the next presentation of “On Stage.” It’s Nicki Parrott, on Saturday, April 2, at 10 pm, and on Monday, April 4 at 7 pm with host Susan Gatschet, only on KUVO JAZZ, the Oasis in the City.
