Purnell Steen and Le Jazz Machine (PSALM) returns to the Phyllis A. Greer Studio on Thursday, February 27, from 7 to 8pm. Established nearly 35 years ago, this popular aggregation is the brain-child of its founder,  Purnell Steen. According to one local critic, “they play the big-band style music with the intimacy of a small ensemble”.  Le Jazz Machine is a sophisticated group with a combined whopping 250 years of musical experience, when all are present.

This Denver-based group is focused on preserving the “Sounds of Five Points”, heard by its leader, Denver native,  Purnell Steen. Their main musical thrust is from the era when “Swing was King”, leaning heavily upon Basie, Ellington and the Tin Pan Alley Army of Broadway Composers.

Purnell Steen – piano
Brendan O’Donoghue – bass
Ben Makinen – drum
Derek Banach – trumpet/flugel horn
Carlos Chavez – alto/tenor saxophone
Myra Warren – vocals
