Piltzecker explains the title of this project: “The ensemble instrumentation is unique with four horns, bass, drums, and vibraphone. Trained as a wind player (trumpet major at Eastman School), I’m always thinking about breathing while playing the vibraphone. And with this group, the percussive nature of the vibes (striking metal bars with mallets) joins with wind instruments whose phrases actually do ride on air – thus the title ‘Vibes on a Breath.’ The combination offers more warmth and humanity to the ‘cool’ sound of the vibes.”

Ted Piltzecker’s five recorded projects have been critically acclaimed and influential in both the percussion and jazz worlds. The current release “Brindica” reflects his four-month venture around the world. It was recorded in New York and Buenos Aires and evokes musical encounters in Iceland, India, Nepal, and Bali. He is a professor emeritus of music composition at the Purchase Conservatory of Music – SUNY and also teaches vibraphone at the Hartt School in Connecticut.

For the upcoming shows around Colorado (at KUVO, in Basalt, and at Dazzle at Baur’s), Piltzecker has recruited six top players: Brad Goode, Paul McKee, John Gunther, Wil Swindler, Gonzalo Teppa, Paul Romaine and Ted Piltzecker on vibes. (The shows in Basalt and at Dazzle are fundraisers for the record project.)

Be sure to tune in for the Ted Piltzecker Septet – “Vibes on a Breath,” LIVE on Thursday, October 13 at 1 pm.

LIVE performances on KUVO JAZZ are supported by Bonfils Stanton Foundation, Drum City Guitarland, Grace Design Pro Audio, Listen Up, Schmitt Music – Englewood, and made possible by KUVO’s Studio Club and Beat Collective members.
